GEAR UP New Hampshire Capacity Building Grant Application

GEAR UP, which stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, is a federal program funded by the U.S. Department of Education whose mission is to significantly increase the number of low-income middle and high school students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary educationGEAR UP New Hampshire is being hosted through a partnership between Campus Compact for New Hampshire and the New Hampshire College & University Council.

Overview and Requirements:

As part of the GEAR UP New Hampshire program, we are pleased to offer you an opportunity to apply for capacity building grants of up to $5,000 to engage in one the following activities:

Priority 1: Develop partnerships with GEAR UP New Hampshire cohort districts to deliver programming or other resources to assist with promoting a college going culture at their schools.GEAR UP New Hampshire cohort school districts are:Berlin School District, Claremont School District, Franklin School District, Laconia School District, Lisbon Regional School, Stewartstown School District, White Mountains Regional School District

  • Professional development for staff
  • Develop resources to address impact of opioid crisis on students
  • Mentoring (Connections to campus alumni, etc.)
  • Create a pilot program for cohort educators to earn their master’s degree or create a practicum experience with our cohort schools
  • Invite higher education faculty and college students to engage with K-12 students

Priority 2: Identifying and disseminating information on best practices related to parental involvement

  • Help schools establish resource centers for parent utilization to help improve academic achievement
  • Provide materials for parents to learn how to work with their students to improve their student’s academic achievement
  • Develop a curriculum to help parents build an understanding of how to use technology to work with their students
  • Design an online library of resources, links, and materials to promote student success

Priority 3: Identifying and disseminating information on best practices for preparing students, including students with disabilities and students who are limited English proficient, to succeed academically in, and prepare financially for postsecondary education

  • Develop an issue brief related to the topic
  • Work with teacher education programs to create a practicum
  • Create a curriculum for high-risk students to explore a pathway to college or career readiness
  • Research and develop a toolkit with strategies for ensuring the success of all students

Priority 4: Working to align state academic standards and curricula with the expectations of postsecondary institutions and employers

  • Convene gatherings of stakeholders to identify areas of opportunity
  • Lead an evaluation process involving higher education faculty to review standards
  • Develop precollege interventions to help students get ready for college by the time they graduate
  • Develop postsecondary, first-year experience that ease students’ transition into credit-bearing coursework

Priority 5: Creating community college programs for individuals who have dropped out of high school that are personalized drop out recovery programs and that allow drop outs to complete a secondary school diploma and begin college level work

Eligibility:

Institutions of higher education that are members of Campus Compact for New Hampshire are eligible to apply for funding.

Process and Timeline:

Rolling deadline: Submit applications as needed.

Funding Requirements:

Applicants are able to apply for up to $5,000 and are required to provide dollar for dollar match in the form of funds or in kind donations.Allowable expenses include, but are not limited to: travel, stipends for curriculum development, participation in college and career fairs, keynote speakers, meeting materials, field trips, campus tours, background checks, mentoring program, professional development activities, etc.

Review Process:

All proposals will be read and scored by a team of reviewers made up of GEAR UP New Hampshire staff and partners.The criteria used will include clarity of proposal, degree to which the proposal clearly identifies intended outcomes, a feasible plan to reach those outcomes, stakeholder and plans for sustainability.

Ineligible Activities:

Sub grant funds may not be used for the following activities: international travel, new construction and retrofitting, furnishings, scholarships, indirect or overhead expenses, political activities and lobbying, or capital campaigns and endowments.
